When a staff becomes a family.

Baby shower 002 As small business owners, there are things  that frustrate us on a regular basis. Mostly wearing too many hats and not having enough time to fulfill all of our jobs in a timely manner. The rewards, however, at the end of the day, far outweigh the negatives. If you are very lucky, you get a crew that clicks and becomes its own family. This photo was taken at a baby shower for one of our Old Town crew, Madeline. The fact that even the male co-workers are in attendance genuinely show their affection for our new Mom, her baby Madison was born yesterday. (Although free drinks probably helped insure their presence!)  When you have a crew that enjoys and looks out for one another, they are truly a pleasure to be around.  Laughter in the workplace among employees that like each other is music to our ears. Again, like Mom and Dad, when laughter turns to silliness, we have to step in and gets the kids back to focus on work. Don’t tell our staff, but this is the scolding that makes us feel like we really are a family!

6.30.09 002 This photo is of a cake that one of our Milwaukee crew members, Ryan, made for a going away party for one of our most cheerful staffers, Latreace. She just graduated from college and is moving on to a job in her major. It always hurts to lose good people, it hurts a little less when you know they are in pursuit of their dream. Before she starts her new job, Latreace is spending a month in China – Ryan’s decoration of this cake reflects that. We will really miss you Latreace and you are always welcome back. Another shop, another family. Caring communities are something we need to value being a part of, wherever they are found, at school, on sports teams, in church, and, thank you to our Spice House families, at work!

A Visit to Old Town

Working at The Spice House’s helpdesk, I spend each day answering calls, live chats, and emails from customers seeking spice suggestions, future customers tracking down that hard-to-find item, and Spice House fans relaying their experience…

Spice Boss’ Top Three

People always ask about my top blends and seasonings. For me, Bronzeville Rib Rub is number one. My father-in-law created this seasoning at the original spice shop, located at 33rd Street and Galena in Milwaukee….
