Patriotic Pickles

Hamburgers are a bread and butter offering for July 4 grill outs. So why not pair the meat with homemade Bread ‘n Butter pickles? Don’t be scared. This recipe is easy and fun. Our steps require just a few minutes of prep work and a whole lot of sitting around.

These pickles are sweet, tart, and lightly spiced. Familiar spices such as Mild Mustard Seeds, Celery Seeds, and Ground Turmeric work together to create this classic hamburger condiment.

It is best to make this recipe a week ahead, but you can also get away with just 24-48 hours of pickling time. A neat tip for these pickles is to salt them before you brine. This step draws out excess water and causes the cukes to sweat like a Redcoat at the first sight of a Minuteman.

If you want to get really American, you’ll double this recipe and invite your neighbors over to join you. Happy Fourth!

Prep time: 20 minutes of work, up to 1 week of marinating.
Serves: 4-6 people or 1 NFL Lineman
